Robotics & Crawlers for Inspection

Introduction

Robotic inspection tools and crawlers are remotely operated systems designed to access confined, hazardous, limited‑access, or otherwise inaccessible environments. These platforms can carry cameras, UT probes, laser scanners, or other sensors, and are commonly used in tanks, vessels, pipelines, heat exchangers, and complex geometries where human entry is unsafe, restricted, or not allowed.

Robotics enable consistent, repeatable inspection paths and offer high stability, positional accuracy, and data reproducibility. Very helpful in hazardous, limited‑access or confined‑space environments where safe human entry is not feasible or permitted.

Robotics & Crawlers – Pro’s & Con’s

Pro’s – What Robotics & Crawlers Can Do

✔️ Internal inspection of tanks, vessels, pipelines and complex geometries
✔️ Repetitive inspection paths with uniform data quality
✔️ Stable and controlled movement for high‑precision UT and sensor measurements
✔️ UT scanning with improved coupling and positional repeatability
✔️ Situations where human entry is unsafe, not allowed or inefficient
✔️ Confined‑space inspections without requiring manned entry
✔️ Accessing hazardous environments (e.g. chemicals, sludge, radiation)
✔️ Reducing confined-space entries, scaffolding and shutdown requirements

Con’s – What Robotics & Crawlers Cannot Do

❌ Complex setup, deployment and logistical preparation
❌ Limited adaptability to unknown, obstructed or highly irregular geometries
❌ Dependence on internal surface condition, friction and cleanliness
❌ Higher operational complexity than manual inspection
❌ Access limitations due to entrance size, internals or obstructions
❌ Requires specialized operators, recovery procedures and contingency plans

Robotics significantly expand inspection capability in hazardous or inaccessible environments, but they do not replace conventional NDT where full flexibility, direct tactile access or certification‑grade measurements are required.
